What is Kickstarter and How Does It Work?

If you’ve never used Kickstarter before, don’t worry, it’s actually very straightforward!

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform where creators like me launch projects and people can pledge money to help bring them to life. You only pay if the project reaches its funding goal. If the goal isn’t met, no one pays anything.

Here’s how it works in simple steps:

1. I launch the project on 26th May at 3:00pm.

2. You choose a reward tier (or just support with a smaller amount) and pledge during the 28-day campaign.

3. If the campaign has reached its funding goal by the end of the 28 days, Kickstarter collects the funds and sends them to us so we can fulfil all the orders. (If the funding goal is not reached no one pays anything and the campaign is unsuccessful)

4. You’ll then receive a survey (via BackerKit) asking for your shipping address and any extra add-ons you may want.

5. We'll then calculate shipping costs (which will vary according to items ordered and country of delivery)

6. We’ll then pack and ship everything as soon as the games arrive from the factory (currently expected late June / early July).

7. We'll begin with domestic orders, so UK backers should begin to receive their copies of the game late July.

8. Then we'll move on to International orders, and depending on shipping timescales, the first international backers should begin to receive their games around August time.

It’s a great way for small creators to bring projects to life with the direct support of people who believe in what they’re doing — especially useful for something like this that’s aimed at churches, families and youth groups rather than mainstream shops.

But what is a reward tier?

When you back a Kickstarter project, you choose a Reward Tier, this is basically the main package you want to receive. Each tier includes different combinations of the game and extras at different price points.

In addition to the main tiers, you can also add Add-ons during the pledge process. These are optional extras you can add to any tier (for example, an extra physical game, the digital version, or the Teacher’s Guide). This gives you the flexibility to build exactly what you want.

It’s very simple, just like adding items to an online shopping basket. You pick your main tier first, then add any extras you’d like before checking out.
